The best way to get a hold of brothers Stephen and Ben Gordon these days is to follow the delicious smell of bread floating around the University of Southern California’s campus.

If you read food blogs, you might not be surprised (as I was) by how charmingly written some of them are. It seems a great many misbegotten writers have found a way to revive their talent by cataloguing what they ate for dinner. And, between the recipes, many of them make interesting notes on culture, politics, and science--all food-related, naturally. No matter how pithy the blog post, it always centers around a toothsome image of the dish in question, contours caressed by delicate mood lighting.

Living according to your ideals is easier said than done. Look at me – my interest in growing my own food has manifested itself in a single tomato I am irrationally unwilling to pick and a series of perished herb plants. I want to be the person with a thriving veggie garden, but I'm sadly lacking the space and know-how. Awhile back, I decided to stitch up some throw pillows. Armed with the free pattern I found online, I headed to a JoAnn’s Fabrics in search of cheap pillow stuffing. A few overworked employees were struggling through a growing line of customers, so I wandered fruitlessly around the store for a while. When I finally found the pillow stuffing, I took a look at their fabric section - a tired hodgepodge under a sign warning something about formaldehyde and cancer.  So I hopped in my car and drove across town to Sew LA.

Giorgio Armani tried to kill Fabrice Penot. At least, it seems his business almost did. A perfume designer, Fabrice worked for years on the House of Armani brand. But even though he was brought in to run the fragrance division, he was constantly called to answer to the financial and marketing departments, who demanded a justification—a real world example of how and where a particular concept has worked for someone else—for every idea he tried to pursue. Demonstrating tested marketplace success before acting is the opposite of innovation, and nearly drove Fabrice Penot mad.
